Lewis Hamilton thinks Ferrari “have something up their sleeve” and expects the Italian team to really challenge Mercedes for victory at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.
The reigning Constructors’ champions have repeatedly warned that their nearest 2015 rivals were “extremely close” after producing “incredible times” in pre-season testing.
For its part, Ferrari has kept a low profile and insisted Mercedes remains the early favourite coming off two all-conquering campaigns in the 1.6-litre V6-turbocharged era.
Speaking in Thursday’s FIA press conference, Hamilton believes the Maranello outfit has been hiding their true potential so far.
“I think this year the whole pack looks a bit closer,” the Briton said. “I think [Ferrari] have got something up their sleeve this weekend.
“They have a lot more than they are talking. They have arrived on the low, but are going to deliver high.”
Although Hamilton enters Melbourne’s season opener with what seems to be another very strong car in the Mercedes W07, the 31-year-old’s motivation has been questioned ever since he wrapped up his third world title last year.
Asked if there was still more to come from him after reaching such heights over the past couple of seasons, Hamilton replied:
“I hope there is. It’s about you searching for perfection, always learning, always growing both inside and outside of the sport. I am just looking forward to that journey. I don’t know what’s to come.
“I don’t know what or when I am going to be growing or more. I guess this is the same for every single one of us. That’s what I am excited about.
“You are always looking for that perfect lap, always looking for the perfect race. You are always looking to raise the bar every time you go out because it can always be raised.”
