FIA revises Austrian GP results following track limit penalties

The FIA has released a revised classification for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix based on a raft of post-race penalties levied upon eight drivers for track limit infringements.

While there is fortunately no change for the top-three, with Max Verstappen winning from Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez, the sanctions have led to several demotions among the top ten, including for Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton.

The revised results follow an investigation by the FIA stewards in the wake of a legitimate protest lodged after the race by Aston Martin.

The following drivers received post-race penalties:

Tsunoda - 5 seconds
Sainz - 10 seconds
Hamilton - 10 seconds
Gasly - 10 seconds
Albon - 10 seconds
Sargeant - 10 seconds
De Vries - 15 seconds
Ocon - 30 seconds

In the final standings, among the top-ten, Carlos Sainz is demoted from P4 to P6, Hamilton drops from P7 to P8, and Pierre Gasly moves from P9 to P10.

This means that Lando Norris is promoted to fourth, Fernando Alonso moves up to fifth, George Russell inherits P8 while Lance Stroll gaisn a position and moves up to P9.

Seven drivers – Hamilton, Tsunoda (twice), Sainz, Albon, Sargeant, Kevin Magnussen and Gasly – had already received time penalties during for repeat infringements.

In their statement, the stewards "very strongly recommend that a solution be found to the track limits situation at this circuit".

Furthermore, in a separate note published earlier, the FIA added that "we will renew our recommendation to the circuit to add a gravel trap at the exit of Turns 9 and 10" for future events.
