Sauber on the verge of fresh investment

Marcus Ericsson says "it seems like the worst part is past us" as Sauber is set to receive fresh investment.

Sauber has been struggling financial for a number of years, not helped by the new power unit regulations and failing to score a point in 2014 which left the team bottom of the constructors' championship. However, sources close to the team have indicated new investment could be confirmed as early as the British Grand Prix weekend and Ericsson says it will boost the team' morale.

“It’s positive that it seems to be in the right way and for everyone that’s a big relief in a way," Ericsson said. "That’s what we needed because it’s been a frustrating start to the year for everyone and with all the problems that we’ve seen I think the sort of news that we’ve had in the last week that it’s going in the right direction is important.

“There is some new stuff coming into the team. The economic side is looking better and the financial side is looking better now, better than it’s been all year. So that’s really good. I don’t know the details yet, that’s the problem, but at least it’s looking better and it seems like the worst part is past us.”

Sauber's plight has been highlighted by a lack of updates to its car this season, but Ericsson his hopeful a more solid financial footing will allow the team to accelerate its development plan.

“It’s going to be difficult because always in Formula One if you’re starting from behind it’s difficult to catch up because everyone is steadily improving. Still we have the same car as we had on day one of testing in Barcelona so I think we some upgrades hopefully for us that can be a bigger step than for other people bringing smaller updates. Let’s hope so."

Asked when the updates are due, Ericsson replied: “To be honest I don’t know.

"We have to wait and see. I think it’s looking better for the team now so hopefully it will be before the summer break but to be honest I don’t know.”
