Follow live coverage of the first free practice session for this weekend’s German Grand Prix LIVE, with comprehensive as-it-happens coverage from F1i.

The 12th round of the season gets underway at 10:00 local time at Hockenheim, as Formula One returns to Germany for the first time since 2014, after last year's event was cancelled following contractual issues with the Nurburgring, which was supposed to host the race.

For the first time this season, Nico Rosberg is not leading the championship standings after the Mercedes driver was overhauled by team-mate and title rival Lewis Hamilton in Hungary.

The German, who won at Hockenheim two years ago, will look to bounce back before the summer break by making it back-to-back victories on home soil.

This will also be Ferrari’s first race following technical director James Allison’s departure earlier this week. The Scuderia, which has yet to taste victory in 2016, is only one point ahead of a resurgent Red Bull team.

The on-track action has not started yet in Hockenheim but there are already plenty to talk about after F1's Strategy Group voted against the introduction of Halo in 2017.

Series bosses think more testing is needed and did not want to rush the device, which has only been sampled on track a handful of times and at low-speed.

The Strategy Group also decided to the lift the ban on radio messages in the wake of a backlash in Silverstone and Hungary. Track limits, another hot topic of late, have also been eased, essentially making it a free for all from this weekend onwards.

The German GP all starts here with FP1 at 10am local time (9am BST). We'll be bringing you all the news and information from trackside as it happens on F1i's live page.
