Williams hints at Perez interest

Claire Williams says that Sergio Perez is a driver whom her team “would consider if he is available” for the 2017 Formula One season.

Despite Force India team principal Vijay Mallya claiming that the Mexican is under contract with the Silverstone-based outfit for next season, Perez has fuelled speculation about his future by repeatedly refusing to confirm that such a deal was in place.

Meanwhile, Williams is looking to shake up its driver line-up with Felipe Massa believed to be leaving the Grove-based team at the end of current campaign.

Having already expressed her interest for Jenson Button, Williams reveals that Perez could be an attractive proposition as well.

“Sergio has done a great job this year, he is an intelligent driver, and of course he is going to be someone we are looking at,” the deputy team principal told Press Association Sport.

“I have only met him briefly on the odd occasion. He is very charming. He is very eloquent, so commercially he would be strong for any team. Of course he is going to be someone you'd consider if he is available.”

Talking to reporters in Germany, Perez insisted he could be driving for another F1 team in 2017 and explained that his sponsors were involved in the decision.

The 26-year-old’s name was briefly linked to Ferrari in the wake of his strong podium finishes in Monaco and Baku, until the Scuderia confirmed Kimi Raikkonen for another year. It has since emerged that Renault and Williams have been in touch with Perez and his backers.
