Barcelona has never stood out as one of the most exciting venues on the F1 calendar because all the teams know it too well. But that makes it an excellent level playing field in terms of judging the current pecking order, and to see which drivers are in peak form. As expected, Max Verstappen has some serious rivals in the ratings!
Logan Sargeant, Williams (P20): 4/10
Ever since the FIA changed the rules regarding the minimum driver age for a superlicence, there's been a lot of speculation that Logan Sargeant might be out of Williams within weeks, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli taking his place in a short apprenticeship before driving for Mercedes next year. Sargeant's performance this weekend was a forceful argument for that course of action, because it's clear that the American just doesn't have the talent needed to last in F1 much longer. This was a thoroughly wretched weekend for Sargeant: qualifying last, getting a three-place grid penalty, and finishing last after a clumsy race. There's no silver lining here for Logan.
Yuki Tsunoda, RB (P19): 5/10
A sharp slump in form for RB despite the revised floor that Yuki Tsunoda had been so excited about. After his early season successes, this was Tsunoda's worst performance of the season by some margin. Slowest in first practice, Tsunoda did at least qualify ahead of his team mate Daniel Ricciardo but in the race he ended up going backwards thanks to a penalty for speeding in pit lane. Let's hope for his sake that this is a blip in performance and not the sign of a significant longer term downturn for Tsunoda and for RB as a whole. Austria should prove very instructive on that score.
