F1i's Driver Ratings for the 2024 Spanish GP

Carlos Sainz, Ferrari (P6, 8 pts): 7/10
After their terrible misfire in Montreal in which neither Carlos Sainz nor Charles Leclerc got to the finish, Ferrari was hoping that new upgrades for the SF-24 would get things back on the right track in Barcelona. Sainz had the best of it in practice - P2 at the end of Friday, and fastest of all in final practice - but he was pipped by Leclerc in qualifying as they locked out the third row of the grid for the Scuderia. The team mates fought for position (with no sign of team orders on show) in the opening laps, and Sainz also clashed with Lewis Hamilton with contact on lap 18. With 12 laps to go, Sainz was in fifth place and ahead of Leclerc, but he was on the hard tyres which proved sub-optimal and it was only a matter of time before the Monegasque came flying past in hot pursuit of George Russell. Double points for Ferrari, but the team would have been hoping for a better result than simply finishing where they had started.

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari (P5, 10 pts): 7.5/10
Ferrari delivered significant upgrades to the SF-24 this weekend, but Charles Leclerc had to wait to receive the new parts on Friday while the team ran comparison tests, which put him behind the curve in terms of race preparation. While Carlos Sainz was fastest of all in final practice, it wasn't until qualifying that Leclerc was at last able to get ahead of his team mate on the timing screens. The pair locked out the third row and had a clumsy battle for team supremacy in the opening laps which resulted in damage to Leclerc's front wing as Sainz forced his way past. Leclerc had the last laugh when his final stint saw him on fresher faster, tyres enabling him to sail past Sainz in pursuit of George Russell. However the earlier incident was still on his mind and he blamed the damage for his failure to catch the Mercedes in time for the chequered flag.
