It was a similar story in 2014 as new power unit regulations failed to see McLaren moving forward. There was a podium in the opening race in Melbourne, but Button was fourth on the road - behind new team-mate Kevin Magnussen - before being promoted due to Daniel Ricciardo's disqualification.
Button's future was uncertain until December when McLaren opted to keep him and demote Magnussen as Fernando Alonso returned ahead of Honda's arrival in 2015.
