Daniil Kvyat admits he does not know how to get out of his current slump, which seems to be “never-ending” after the Toro Rosso driver qualified a lowly 19th for the German Grand Prix.
The Russian has been going through a rough patch after losing his Red Bull seat to Max Verstappen earlier this season. Since then, Kvyat has only scored two points compared to 26 for Toro Rosso team-mate Carlos Sainz.
“I don’t feel great, it’s not a great period for me,” Kvyat admitted. “It seems like it’s never ending up, I’m trying every weekend so much but nothing is working so far, so it needs to be more than that.
“I don’t know what I need, I don’t know. I just need the feeling in the car. When it comes back it will be much better, so yeah, I can’t remember the last time I had a good feeling with a car so I don’t know what’s going on.
Talking about his qualifying performance, the 22-year-old added: “It was a very bad lap with many mistakes. I was expecting to be out of Q1.”
Kvyat was all the more disappointed that he had showed improved pace in Friday practice at Hockenheim
“We found some good things yesterday but I’m not sure if this is playing a little bit against us, it was a bit of a too relaxed day.
“I don’t know but when it came to qualifying it didn’t feel a very good feeling connection with the car and I didn’t have the connection.”
It was reported earlier this week that Kvyat was about to get dropped by Red Bull. GP2 Series points leader Pierre Gasly, who recovered from a terrible start in Saturday’s Feature Race to third at the flag, is the most likely candidate to replace the Russian.
