With P4 in Q3 with and a five-spot gearbox swap penalty, Hamilton knew his race would be all about damage control. After escaping contact with Verstappen unscathed, he put in a rare but astounding three-car overtaking move on Alonso, Ocon and Hülkenberg on lap 5. His late race pace on the medium compound indicated that he would have had the pace to finish on the podium even without Räikkönen's demise.
