Mick Schumacher will graduate to German F4 this year after Michael Schumacher’s 15-year-old son has reached a deal with front-running squad Van Amersfoort Racing.
Schumacher Jr steps up from karting where he finished runner-up in the German, European and world championships last year. Mick will race in the ADAC Formula 4 series with the team that helped Max Verstappen fast-track his way to F1 straight from FIA Euro F3.
“We have seen his skills in testing and we are looking forward to a successful season," said team boss Frits van Amersfoort. "In the last couple of years, it has become a tradition for us that we offer the runner-up from the German junior karting championship a test session in our simulator.
"This is handled by the DMSB, the German motorsport authority, and that is how we first got in touch with Mick Schumacher last autumn. He spent a full day in the simulator at our headquarters in the Netherlands, then we witnessed him during a test session at Valencia, and, eventually, we reached an agreement to compete together in this year's ADAC Formula 4 series."
Like his father, Mick Schumacher will be managed by Sabine Kehm, who has been looking after the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s interests for many years.
The teenager will have his first taste of car racing when the 2015 German F4 season gets underway at Oschersleben on April 25-26.
