Mercedes dominated the opening session, with Lewis Hamilton setting the pace from team-mate Nico Rosberg, while Sebastian Vettel was over 1.6s adrift of the Mercedes pair in third place. While Ferrari was third and fourth ahead of the two Red Bulls, both Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen only used the soft tyre compared to the top four all on supersofts.
McLaren showed up well in the opening session in seventh and eighth but appeared to have a handful of a car, while Vettel was another to spin during first practice.
Lap times are already very quick, with the resurfaced Hungaroring seeing the pole position time from last year beaten by both Hamilton and Rosberg in FP1. As the weekend goes on, the lap record could well be under threat.
FP2 should see Red Bull's true pace as it finally runs the supersoft tyre, while Ferrari will hope its race pace is more competitive than its one-lap showing was this morning.
