Renault team principal Frédéric Vasseur says reserve driver Esteban Ocon’s “special aura” makes him “an asset” for any Formula One team.
A Mercedes junior, Ocon was loaned out to Renault upon its return as an F1 constructor. After impressing both manufacturers in his test outings, the 19-year-old was promoted to a race seat at Manor during the summer break.
“I know Esteban as a person very well,” Vasseur told French radio RMC. “He drove for me in the past [winning the 2015 GP3 Series title with the Vasseur-led ART Grand Prix].
“I have seen him mature and I know how involved and determined he is. He knows where he comes from and where he wants to go.
“Being a racing driver is also about motivating 1,000 people who are working hard to get results. From that side of the job, he has a special aura and connection with all departments.
“He is at the factory early in the morning and works until late at night. He is stimulating and a true asset in the functioning of a team”.
Ocon’s promotion to Manor has been interpreted as a springboard to a full-time role with Renault in 2017. While he remains tight-lipped on next year's line-up, Vasseur hints that the youngster's profile fits the bill.
“Part of my job is to keep an eye on all drivers in the paddock, but also in the feeder series. Of course, I have a better assessment of our current drivers [Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer] because I am closer to them.
“I am also well aware that drivers are a key element of any long-term project. Not only for the results but also as a driving force for the entire team. By the end of September, early October, we should get a clearer picture.”
