Kevin Magnussen says Renault was caught out by a new approach at the Monaco Grand Prix but is confident it will deliver a better performance in Canada this weekend.
Renault had an upgraded power unit in Magnussen’s car but was also running some new aerodynamic parts which the team had been happy with from the post-race test in Barcelona. However, Magnussen complained about the car’s balance in the corners as a result in Monaco and felt the team could not get the new direction to work on the street circuit.
“We went into the [Monaco] weekend with a very different car to what we normally have because we found some things in Barcelona,” Magnussen said. “There was a new system on the car, new parts on the car that we liked in Barcelona but when we came [to Monaco] it didn’t work at all for us. Which doesn’t mean these parts won’t work elsewhere, but it’s definitely not something you just put on the car and run.”
And Magnussen is hopeful Renault will have made progress between races which will make its approach more successful in Canada.
“We believe it should work, it’s more just dialling it in and fine tuning it. [In Monaco] we didn’t feel like we had the time, we didn’t feel like we’d be able to make the car work so hopefully we can learn more and be able to run it for the rest of the season.”
