While the title itself was barely in doubt heading in to the race in Austin, Hamilton took the crown in dramatic fashion. A chaotic race on a drying track had seen him lead, then drop as low as fourth as Rosberg looked set to keep his own slim hopes alive until a mistake from the German handed Hamilton the lead late on, and with Rosberg and Vettel coming home second and third respectively, a familiar podium ensured Hamilton won his third world championship and became the first British driver to defend the title.
