Qualifying saw Button and Alonso evenly matched, with Button believing he could have reached Q3 had he been on the receiving end of the tow his team-mate got. Was following Alonso closely on track and looked more comfortable with the car in the opening laps until a suspected gearbox failure stopped him on the long back straight before the final chicane.
