It was a weekend to forget for Renault. The team knew it would have its work cut out for itself with Hulkenberg starting at the rear. He was unexpectedly joined however by Carlos Sainz following a flurry of component changes. Starting from row 10, he was the only driver to start on the uncompetitive medium compound. Barely more comfortable with the softs, Carlito managed to get past the Williams’ but had nothing for the Sauber of Marcus Ericsson.
