The Kiwi looked good in qualifying at just 0.021s adrift of his team mate. But as Gasly marched forward at the start, Hartley fell back. Overtaken by Sainz then Bottas, he had a fine battle with Ericsson, but knew it was for naught as he still had to make a stop. From there the pair of FW41s was too far up the road to be caught.
