Knowing he was to start from the rear of the field after a complete power unit change, Bottas still took part in qualifying with the idea of helping Hamilton, but it nearly went very pear shaped with Vandoorne in Q3. In the race, on the run to La Source at the start he ran straight into the back of Sirotkin with no other consequence than an unimportant five-second time penalty. Later he clocked the fastest lap of the race. He methodically moved up the order but the gap to Verstappen was too great to have a shot at the podium.
