Bottas performed well in qualifying in an uncompetitive car but failed to make it through to Q3, though Kimi Raikkonen’s grid penalty saw him start from tenth place. Any advantage from a free tyre choice was lost due to the rain, and then his first pit stop saw his race effectively ruined. A rear jack problem delayed Bottas and saw him get stuck behind Pascal Wehrlein’s Manor, leaving him outside the points through no fault of his own. Williams believes he could have been in the fight for seventh place without the issue.
