Bad luck at the start of the race was followed by a massive boost for Rosberg's title hopes in Malaysia, as he opened up a clear gap in the championship. Starting from second behind Hamilton, Rosberg was hit by Vettel at Turn 1 and dropped to the back of the field. An impressive recovery drive followed which included a robust move on Raikkonen but it should have been a case of damage limitation until Hamilton - leading comfortably - retired with power unit failure and suddenly third place saw Rosberg gain 15 points on his team-mate.
