Pascal Wehrlein - 10th place, 1 point - 9.5/10
Toto Wolff said the Mercedes youngster proved he is “a special boy” with his qualifying performance, and he exceeded that in the race to complete a hugely impressive weekend. Manor couldn’t make the soft tyre last long enough to make a one-stop work so did two short stints on ultrasofts at the start of the race. The second stop came at the worst possible moment, with a safety car one lap later leaving Wehrlein as the only driver a lap down. Unlapped himself but was 12s adrift of the field at the restart and had to make his soft tyres last for over 40 laps. Excellent pace, clean overtaking and brilliant tyre management saw him rise to 11th behind Bottas, and was harassing the Williams but unable to find a way through before Perez retired late on. Even had to defend robustly from Esteban Gutierrez into Turn 5 amid the chaos with the ailing Rosberg but clung on for only Manor’s second top ten finish since it entered as Virgin Racing in 2010.
