The start of the European leg of the 2019 Formula 1 world championship brought a raft of upgrades up and down pit lane, and a chance to see how teams and drivers are really beginning to shape up. It's good news for some - especially Mercedes - but elsewhere there are some brutal home truths to be swallowed...

Lando Norris (Retired, Lap 44): 5/10
Lando Norris has had some strong outings since joining McLaren at the start of the season, but unfortunately Spain didn't prove to be one of them. He was oddly slow in practice and as a result comprehensively out-paced by his team mate in all three sessions, although he did get the upper hand over Carlos Sainz in qualifying. Unfortunately that was all for nought when he promptly dropped six places after running wide on the first lap. Then his race came to an early end with that clumsy encounter with Lance Stroll on lap 44, although we'll say that both drivers are more or less equally at fault for that one and leave it at that.
