Sebastian Vettel certainly raised his game to shine like the brightest star in F1 after a rather dim time of it last time in Monza, but was it enough to earn him our driver of the weekend accolade? George Russell (Collision, L34): 6/10
Bang goes Williams' perfect record of finishing every race of 2019. George Russell's first retirement of his F1 career came on lap 34 after he tangled with Romain Grosjean as the pair exited turn 8. Russell protested that he was the innocent party and to be honest that's more or less the way it looked to us as well: "At the apex we were side by side, I had the inside momentum and then come to the exit I was well ahead of him. At that point it’s the guy on the outside that needs to concede the corner." Even before that, the weekend hadn't really come together for Russell despite promising signs in FP3 where he was up to 15th place in the timesheets, ahead of the likes of Antonio Giovinazzi, Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean. Sadly problems with traffic and cold tyres meant that pace wasn't there in qualifying, and in the race he peaked at 17th place. There have been better days for the young rookie, and will be again in the future.
