One thing that does not look like decreasing anytime soon is the F1 fraternity’s enthusiasm to come back to Barcelona, which now serves as the official kick-off to the European leg of the season.
Listening to drivers expressing their opinions about both the city and the nearby circuit could well make you think that they are working as travel guides for the Catalonia region.
“Barcelona’s really, really cool: lots of atmosphere, really good vibe,” said Ricciardo. “I’m also not entirely unaware of the fact it has some pretty good beaches and, as everyone is probably tired of hearing, I’m always happiest when we’ve got sand and water nearby.
“It’s also a great city for food. Obviously I eat carefully but I’m not one of those drivers who completely ignores the local cuisine. The restaurants in Barcelona are definitely a highlight and I’m a big fan of eating out here.”
Nico Hulkenberg is equally buoyant, especially when it comes to culinary treats.
“The Barcelona race is one of the best weekends on the calendar,” said the Force India racer. “The locals are passionate and there’s always a big crowd on race day, so the atmosphere is great. I always stay in the city centre and I really like the place – plus the food is really good: I love paella.”
F1 drivers enjoy the great support they receive from local fans at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Even defending champion Lewis Hamilton, who had quite a rocky relationship with Spanish fans at the start of his career when he crossed swords with home favourite Alonso at McLaren, is a fan of the place.
“Barcelona is a great city,” said the Briton. “The architecture is stunning and it's a young, vibrant place so I always enjoy the weekend.
“The support I have in Spain is growing every time we go.”
With a new race contract and three Spaniards currently on the grid, Hamilton - and the rest of the F1 paddock - can expect to be heading back to Barcelona for many years to come. If only every European round could sit quite as comfortably…
