Logan Sargeant (P12): 7.5/10
Of the three rookies on display this weekend, Logan Sargeant surprisingly turned out to be the best of them. We say 'surprise' because coming in he doesn't have the reputation of either former Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri or former Formula E title winner Nyck de Vries, and he was the last driver signed for 2023 after scrambling to get enough points to qualify for a superlicence. And it's also a surprise because the Williams FW45 is frankly not a great car and shouldn't be a match for either the McLaren or the AlphaTauri. But it was, and Sargeant put in a very solid performance at the wheel as he got his first 57 race laps under his belt. Anyone who thinks he's on the grid merely by virtue of his US passport might just have to think again on this evidence.
Yuki Tsunoda (P11): 7.0/10
There's a sense of malaise hanging over AlphaTauri at the moment, not helped by the rumours that Red Bull want to offload the expensive item on the corporate books now that Dieter Mateschitz is no longer around. It falls to Yuki Tsunoda to try and carry the team on his back now that he's technically the senior driver, after a significantly improved sophomore season in 2022. He certainly established himself over new team mate Nyck de Vries and was faster than the Dutch driver in every practice, qualifying and race session this weekend, and came very close to catching Alex Albon at the end of the Grand Prix to snatch a championship point. If he'd done that then we would definitely have given him a higher rating; but he didn't, so we couldn't.
