Valtteri Bottas (P10, 1 pt): 7/10
It's been something of a lean spell for Valtteri Bottas, who hasn't scored any points or finished in the top ten since the season opener in Bahrain. He was actually credited with the top time in FP1 on Friday, but that was because the session lasted all of four minutes before it was red flagged and unable to restart due to issues with the CCTV safety system at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. But the Alfa was still pretty decent in the extended second session in which Bottas was seventh fastest, and he was remained tucked into the top ten in final practice on a damp track. Unfortunately he didn't fare so well in qualifying and dropped out at the end of the second round, leaving him starting from 15th. Lining up on the dirty side of the grid caused him to lose out to Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll at the start, but the team had confidence in the raw pace of the C43 and gave Bottas a chance by putting him on hard tyres for a 36-lap initial stint before swapping to the mediums. That left him running at the edge of the top ten for the rest of the afternoon: it looked like he'd been pipped to the points by Lance Stroll on the final lap, but Lando Norris's post-race penalty promoted him back into the top ten after all. And really rather worthy, too.
Lance Stroll (P9, 2 pts): 6.5/10
Maybe the pressure of being Fernando Alonso's team mate at Aston Martin is starting to eat away at Lance Stroll, but he was not on his best form this week for his home race in Canada. He was in the top ten in both FP2 and FP3 but then things went awry in qualifying: he tapped the wall, needed a new front wing, and that put him out on the wrong tyres at the crucial moment. Not only did he miss the second cut, he was handed a further three place grid drop for impeding leaving him starting from 16th on the grid while Alonso was on the front row vying for victory with Max Verstappen. Not a great comparison when his dad - sorry, team owner - had been predicting a double podium for Aston this weekend. Starting the race on the medium tyres, he made up two spots with passes on Kevin Magnussen and Valtteri Bottas at the start but had just pitted when the safety car came out for George Russell's accident, which undid that early good work and returned him to P16 behind Nico Hulkenberg. He brought forward the timing of his second pit stop and came in on lap 27, and that helped pull him out of the DRS logjam and make up places as those ahead made their own second stops. He found himself slotted in between the two McLarens, and when Lando Norris got by Bottas he was also able to pick off the Alfa on the final lap to get into the top ten. Norris' post race penalty further promoted him to ninth and doubled his points haul in the final classification.
