Sergio Perez, Red Bull (Accident damage, lap 51): 2/10
Obviously Sergio Perez signed his two year contract extension with Red Bull some weeks ago, because no one would be seeking his signature based on his form in the last few races. Missing the first cut in qualifying for the second race weekend in succession was bad enough, but we're getting used to his Saturday struggles. More worrying was quite how badly he drove on Sunday, clipping Pierre Gasly at the start and then having numerous mishaps before the big one on lap 51 that ripped his rear wing apart. Trying to get the damaged car back to pit lane (in a vain attempt not to trigger a safety car that could sabotage Max Verstappen's lead at that point) and scattering debris all over the place got him a deserved grid penalty for Spain. Still, it could have been worse. Oh, wait - no, actually it couldn't.
Alexander Albon, Williams (Accident, Lap 52): 7/10
After clinching his first points of 2024 last time out in Monaco, Alex ALbon enjoyed another solid weekend in Montreal and deserved better than to be taken out by Carlos Sainz making a mistake with 18 laps to go. Albon was the perfect combination of bold and cautious in the changeable conditions over the weekend, and was rightly rewarded by a spot in the final round of qualifying on Saturday. He lost out at the start to Kevin Magnussen whose Haas was on full wets, and then to Charles Leclerc, but he was able to tame Sainz in the second Ferrari and by the time the safety car came out for Logan Sargeant's retirement he was back in the top ten. He was still there - and still battling with Sainz - when a mistake by the Spaniard took them both out of the running.
