The 1982 F1 season turned out to be a sombre year for F1 and Ferrari, which saw Canadian great Gilles Villeneuve die in a crash at Zolder. His team-mate Didier Pironi then broke both his legs at Hockenheim during a rainy practice session. Fellow Frenchman Patrick Tambay, who had been offered a seat at Maranello after Villeneuve’ death, would lift the team’s morale, if ever so slightly, by winning the German Grand Prix a couple of days later.
