MERCEDES’ WIDENED TURNING VANE CAPE
Mercedes made the leading edges of its turning vane cape wider on both sides of the front end (compare yellow arrows). As a reminder, the turning vanes merge under nose to create a cape that forms a kind of extractor whose shape evokes a diffuser.
Along with the bargeboards, the revamped turning vane cape is part of a new Mercedes aero package brought to Sepang. After trialling the update in Friday practice, Lewis Hamilton did not run it in qualifying, unlike team-mate Valtteri Bottas who admitted afterwards that he should have stuck to the older spec.
