F1i's Driver Ratings for the 2022 Japanese GP

Pierre Gasly (P18): 5.5/10
Pierre Gasly seemed to be a simmering cauldron of fury this weekend, at least judging by his angry radio exchanges with the AlphaTauri pit wall Maybe the messages we heard weren't representative of his true state of mind, or perhaps relations within the team really have broken down, contributing to his 2023 move to Alpine announced just before FP3 where he finished slowest of anyone in the now-dry conditions. Sure enough he missed the first cut in qualifying and started from P16. He was unfortunate to pick up a piece of advertising hoarding dislodged by Carlos Sainz' accident, and rightly outraged to find a recovery vehicle on track as he sought to catch the pack, but speeding under red flag conditions is also a grievous breach. Gasly is no beginner, he should know better.

Mick Schumacher (P17): 5.5/10
Just when Mick Schumacher really needs a stroke of luck to earn himself a third season in Formula 1, everything seems to be going against him. Seventh fastest in the shortened, wet FP1 he then managed to aquaplane off after the end of the session while heading back to the pits, damaging the VF-22 to the point where a whole new chassis had to be built up. You could almost hear the cogs in Guenther Steiner's mind calculating the cost. Missing all of FP2 lost him vital experience in wet conditions, so that despite starting the race from P15 after a decent qualifying and gaining four places on the first lap, he ended up stuck in 14th for most of the afternoon after pitting for intermediate tyres. Just before that, however, he had been leading the Grand Prix (for not quite a full lap), so that's something for the album.
