F1i's Driver Ratings for the 2023 Japanese GP

Charles Leclerc (P4, 12 pts): 8.5/10
After a curiously quiet time since his accident at Zandvoort, Charles Leclerc looked more like the Ferrari star we know and love this weekend. In practice he soon proved himself slightly quicker than his team mate, Singapore winner Carlos Sainz. He went on to qualify on the second row of the grid, although by then it was the McLaren boys who were in the ascendency behind Max Verstappen. Leclerc seemed to give up on the idea of fighting any of the top three quite early on and instead focused on dealing with the threat from behind from Mercedes: George Russell's one stop strategy might not have worked out for the Briton, but it nonetheless gave the Ferrari pit wall some worrying moments. Leclerc simply kept his head down as the fortunes of others around him waxed and waned, and in the closing laps he was back where he'd started, in fourth, keeping a wary eye on Hamilton and Sainz all the way to the finish line.

Oscar Piastri (P3, 15 pts): 9.5/10
Remember last year's furore about Oscar Piastri turning his back on Alpine in favour of a seat at McLaren? The way the season started, there were more than a few people lamenting that the Aussie had made a terrible mistake and doomed his career. But then again they said something similar about Lewis Hamilton's clearly misguided decision to sign up with Mercedes. That turned out quite well for Hamilton, and Piastri has certainly got everything he could have dreamed off with his transfer to McLaren. It definitely paid off on Saturday when he was the first rookie since Lance Stroll in 2017 to earn a front row spot, and true to his word he did his level best to attack Max verstappen at the start of the race on Sunday. He'll be disappointed to end up losing out to his team mate Lando Norris and finish in third, but it's nonetheless his first F1 podium. What a stellar performance!
