Carlos Sainz Jr

Motor Racing - Formula One World Championship - Malaysian Grand Prix - Preparations - Sepang, Malaysia

The Question: Carlos, is it a big motivation for you to beat the new Ayrton Senna as you did in the first race?

CS: For me the first motivation is always to extract the maximum potential from myself, focus myself and with self-confidence and knowing that you can extract the full potential from yourself then you should believe that you are in front of your teammate. I believe Max is a great talent, I believe he’s going to perform really well this year and he will be a very tough competitor but my main focus, as I said, is not to beat him but first of all extract the maximum potential from myself and that will put me in a good position for sure.

What he might have meant:

CS: Oh yes, I believe Max is a great talent, I believe he’s going to perform really well this year and he will be a very tough competitor… oh, who am I kidding, he bloody deserved it, the git. That little bastard stole my seat last August. It was my bloody turn. I’d paid my dues. I’d spent years listening to Dr Marko bang on and on about “Jochen this, Le Mans 1971 that, blah, blah, blah” and in comes Max ‘ooh look at me, I’m a Red Bull Junior’ bloody Verstappen. A week later he’s an F1 driver. WTF? If it hadn’t have been for Sebastian buggering off to Ferrari, Dany moving up and a second seat opening I’d be tooling around in sports cars or, God forbid, helping my dad with that bloody useless Peugeot beach buggy.
