UNDER SURVEILLANCE
This season more than ever, tyre management is one of the key performance parameters.
Hence the importance of evaluating tyre tread temperature on Friday and Saturday morning in order to anticipate the behaviour and the degradation of the tyres for qualifying and the race.
Infra-red cameras lodged in the rear view mirrors or the front wing measure the superficial tyre temperatures at the front. At the rear, the sensors are placed in the floor, underneath a bulge. The collected data are fed back to the team’s garage in real time via telemetry
However, the new design of the Mercedes mirrors, first seen in Austria, no longer allows to house an infrared camera. The Brackley engineers have added a camera under the rear view mirror for free practice sessions.
Because of its blown mirrors, Ferrari also had to place its thermal imaging cameras elsewhere: above and around the engine air intake.
