On this day in 1980, the US Grand Prix West at Long Beach sadly marked the end of Clay Regazzoni's career. The colorful Swiss driver crashed when the brake pedal of his Ensign failed at the end of a long, high-speed straight travelling at approximately 280 km/h. The tragic accident left Regazzoni paralyzed from the waist down, ending his competitive career.
