Dan Gurney tried adding a mask to his crash helmet in the 1960s, as the US racing legend sought to enhance head protection. As you can see above, the end result was pretty spectacular if not a little bit scary. Gurney eventually ditched the concept for it was not really comfortable in action. The four-time grand prix winner would still become the first Formula One driver to wear a full-face helmet in 1968, with most of his peers following suit the very next year.
