THE RIGHT BALANCE

The gold wheels (11 and 12) set the break balance (BB): the left wheel (11) labeled BMIG  works in conjunction with the MGU-K's harvest adjuster and engine braking, while the right wheel (12) enables adjustments to the front brakes. Both wheels work in conjunction with each other in order to generate optimal braking power. Buttons BB+ and BB- (13 and 16) permit additional fine-tuning.

The red X button (14) is used to confirm an instruction from the pitwall or even as a code message when pressed multiple times. This is especially useful when the in-car radio fails.  MARK (15) is used to mark a display mode so that the driver can cycle through menus whilst retaining one particular aspect of their choice.

The driver and team can naturally communicate with each other by radio. The driver can either press and hold the TALK radio button (17) to talk to the team, or press once to speak before pressing again to turn it off.

Until now, the blue button (18) was used by the driver at the beginning of the race to select a mode for the launch phase - Race Start (RS). The button accesses a pre-defined launch map which typically includes optimal revs, clutch and ERS (Energy Recovery System) boost settings. But as mentioned above, starting at the Belgian Grand Prix the clutch bite point procedure shall to be disabled when the car leaves the garage to join the grid.
