McLAREN ADDS A PAIR OF “HANDS” TO THE BOOMERANG
Continuing our paddock tour, from the most complex to the least elaborate, the second most sophisticated Halo is without doubt McLaren's.
As with Toro Rosso, the deflector has three planes. We know, after being passed over and under the front wing, the airflow rises. The role of the elements placed in the wake of the front wing (such as the suspension arms for example) is to divert this flow down so that the rear wing receives fairly energized air and can work properly.
In this context, it can be assumed that the triplane deflector installed on the Halo deflects the airflow downwards, both to supply the engine air intake with fresh air and to bend the flow towards the rear wing.
On the MCL33, the deflector is larger than the top of the arch and wraps a portion of its sides, like a three-fingered hand that clings to it.
On the middle image (blue arrow), there is the HSSC ("High Speed Safety Camera"), now housed in the middle pylon and no longer on the engine cover.
