Tech F1i: How Formula 1 teams customized their Halo

STRAIGHT FORWARD AT MERCEDES AND RED BULL

Against all odds, Mercedes, usually quick to add any aerodynamic element (following its segmentation philosophy), equipped the W09 with a Halo simply streamlined, without deflector or vortex generators.

The same simplicity can be found at Red Bull, where the edges visible in the cockpit protection have, however, been seriously slimmed (see the red arrows).

As we can see, the variations are probably not as important as expected, a sign that there is no quick fix and that the gains in this area are marginal.

Without reopening the aesthetics debate, another way to personalize the Halo would be to let the drivers decorate it (for better or for worse), which would make it easier to identify them, now that their helmets have become almost invisible.

"We should be able to decorate the Halo in our own way," says Sebastian Vettel. "We cannot negotiate its positioning, we cannot install it in the back, for example. So it might be up to us, the drivers, to design it."
