What can we see at the front of an F1 car?

TORSION BARS

Torsion bars are made of metal – usually a steel alloy – and longitudinally mounted within the chassis, on each side of the car (above is last year’s Lotus E23). Each front torsion bar is attached to the survival cell on one end, and connects to the rocker that is linked to the upper suspension arm on the other. When the car is subjected to a compressive force – for instance in cornering –, the torsion bar will bend in order to limit the movement of the suspension.

STEERING RACK

Unlike other controls (such as the throttle), the driver’s input on the steering wheel must be physically transferred to the wheels, in accordance with the technical regulations. What’s more, power assisted steering systems can only be hydraulically controlled – not electronically.
