Carlos Sainz (P8, 4 pts): 6.5/10
After upholding Ferrari's honour in Monaco with second place in the absence of his team mate Charles Leclerc, this was a significantly more scrappy weekend for Sainz. Third fastest in both of Friday's practice sessions, he was still in the running on Saturday and picked up a satisfactory fifth place on the grid before spinning at the end of qualifying in reaction to Yuki Tsunoda getting into trouble: "I saw the smoke from the lock up but hoped he had continued. When I saw the crash it was too late and I ended up touching the barriers." The start of the race also didn't go according to plan when he was immediately ambushed by Sergio Perez but things settled down after that until his pit stop on lap 10, when he spun on the out lap while getting the new tyres up to temperature. It dropped him to 15th place and left him a mountain to climb for the rest of the afternoon, which he achieved with passes on Antonio Giovinazzi, Fernando Alonso and Daniel Ricciardo - although Alonso would have his revenge at the final restart.
Yuki Tsunoda (P7, 6 pts): 7.5/10
It's been a challenging time for Yuki Tsunoda, who after several weeks of underperforming has been effectively 'grounded' by AlphaTauri by being made to relocate to Italy where team boss Franz Tost can keep a closer eye on him and put him on a stricter training regimen. But in that case, the new circumstances seem to be already paying off and this was a much better showing for the Japanese rookie than his recent efforts. He improved with each practice session to the point where a spot in the final round of qualifying for the first time in his F1 career proved no surprise, although he then spun in turn 3 at the end of the session and panicked Carlos Sainz into a sympathy accident of his own. The lesson in safety-first bore fruit and Tsunoda had a trouble free race, losing out to Fernando Alonso at the start but then settling into eighth place ahead of Lando Norris. Retirements ahead of him saw him take the final restart in sixth but he lost out to Norris and Alonso (for a second time), although he picked up a place from Lewis Hamilton's error. Started seventh, finished seventh, but not even Helmut Marko will be complaining this weekend.
