FERRARI’S KNIFE

After revising the side panels of the SF71-H in Montreal, Ferrari tested a new front wing at Le Castellet.

The main difference between the two models lies in the length of the slot made in the main plane. The Scuderia had already analysed the functioning of this area of the front wing by comparing two versions at the first Grand Prix in Australia.

On the variant evaluated this weekend, the slot is much longer: an additional airflow passes across the wing and widens its operating window. Fragmenting a surface in different planes can increase its angle of attack while reducing the risk of flow separation.

In addition, the curvature of the upper arch has been revised: the transition with the flaps is less pronounced (compare the white arrows), which modifies the vortex generated by the arches’ funnels – a vortex whose role it is to push the dirty wake produced by the rotating front wheels.
