Tech F1i - No respite on the development front

FULL-SCALE TESTS

In the hope of finding a solution to the aerodynamic difficulties that it can not identify or solve in the wind tunnel, the McLaren team is conducting an extensive test program in free practice, comparing different versions of rear wings, etc.

In Austria, the team equipped the MCL33 with a front wing very different from the standard model. It does not have, in its outer part, funnel (yellow arrows) and has a flatter leading edge (red arrows). It is not known if this is a new concept or an experimental wing to generate another flow to better isolate a problem located elsewhere on the car.

The absence of a funnel (which generates a vortex intended to chase the turbulence caused by the rotation of the wheels) is reminiscent of another experimental wing which McLaren had evaluated in free practice at the US and Mexico Grand Prix in 2016.
