Jean Alesi definitely left his heart in Maranello as the former Ferrari star still takes a keen interest in the Scuderia's performance and actions.

Speaking to the Gazetta dello Sport, the Frenchman hailed Ferrari's decision to nominate GP2 runner-up Antonio Giovanazzi as its reserve driver this year, as Alesi evidently holds the young hopeful in high regard.

"It's fantastic," the Frenchman said, "but it would have been astonishing if Ferrari had allowed such an opportunity to escape.

"Giovinazzi is a well educated young man, which is rare these days, but above all he is an excellent driver. He came within a hair of winning the title in his first GP2 season, now he just needs some good mileage."

In addition to Giovanazzi, Alesi is also keeping a watchful eye on another promising talent: his 17-year-old son Giuliano who will be racing for a second season in GP3 in 2017.

"Working with the (Ferrari) academy is a guarantee," said  Alesi. "Giuliano can develop without rushing."

Alesi senior isn't too keen on junior moving up the ranks too fast, and believes even just a mere test in an F1 car would perhaps not serve his son's bets interest at this early stage.

"If necessary, I would lay down in front of the box exit!" he exclaimed. "Giuliano can only think of GP3 for now.

"If he wants to get in a F1 car, then we have one at home that he can get in and I will take a photo."
