Tech F1i: A closer look at the Red Bull RB13

FLYING UNDER THE RADAR

Comparing the Mercedes and Red Bull at the back shows that the RB13’s diffuser sits higher than on the W08, although the latter features more vanes in this crucial area for performance.

Red Bull kept a rather low-profile during the two pre-season tests compared to Mercedes and Ferrari but Horner was quick to point out that his team has never sought to win the winter world championship when speaking to Autosport.

Think back 12 months and the RB12 did not exactly set the world on fire in 2016’s pre-season testing. Still, the car ended up winning two grands prix when Ferrari’s SF16-H failed to secure any victory after shining the previous winter.

The Milton Keynes-based outfit is quietly confident entering the 2017 campaign but it also knows that its capacity to challenge for the world title again will rest on Renault’s all-new power unit, which encountered a few niggling problems in Barcelona over the past two weeks.
