FERRARI'S NINE-SLOT FLOOR

Ferrari also sampled a new floor during Friday’s free practice, which featured extra slots right before the rear tyres. Besides the usual three apertures, there were six extra openings pierced in the area!

Ferrari’s design is different from the similar one Toro Rosso started implementing at Barcelona and also less sophisticated than the L-shaped solution McLaren introduced in Austria. But the goal is the same, i.e to fight tyre squirt by keeping the dirty wake coming off the rotating rear wheels away from the car’s diffuser.

In channeling the high-pressure airflow coming from above the floor through its new slots, the Ferrari engineers aim to re-energise the flow on the diffuser’s edges, which in turn will help divert the air turbulence produced by the rotation of the wheels.
