ATTACK OF THE TURNING VANES
McLaren, Williams, and Red Bull have all sampled new types of turning vanes under the nose of their challenger.
Such elements are crucial, as they deflect the dirty, turbulent wake of air coming off the front tyres by channelling the Y250 vortex.
The FW37 used to have a pair of small vertical vanes. These have been replaced with a three-element assembly that is both longer and more strongly profiled.
The difference was harder to spot underneath the RB11, although the newest vanes are more twisted.
Change was more visible on the MP4-30's under-nose three-vane installation, as the elements now merge into the oblique section at the bottom (compare white elements).
