Vandoorne's new electric life: 'FE is like going back to basics'

How did the integration in your new team go?

"It has been quite easy, to be honest. They're a good group of guys and very easy-going people and I think I've been received very well within the team.

"I feel comfortable as well with the people working there as we have been thrown in there together.

"Everyone is new to the series and to the working space of Formula E. So, we need to be very connected with each other and to be working strongly together because it's a big learning curve.

"No one really has experience in how things are going. Every weekend, we are picking up new bits of information and we need to be a strong group together."

Coming from an established team as McLaren, was it the challenge of starting from scratch that attracted you to Formula E with that particular team?

"It was already very attractive to come to Formula E. The beginning is a bit difficult but, looking at the long term, I think that bodes really well with obviously a constructor as Mercedes coming in.

"We know their history and all the success they have achieved in the past. When they enter in something, they always give it more than 100 percent to succeed.

"So it's exciting to be part of that project from the beginning and to grow together.

"So, at the moment, I'm not looking at it but rather try to see the bigger picture for the future. And that’s something I'm especially looking forward to.

Can you talk us through your first experience behind the wheel of a Gen2 car?

"It was quite strange in the beginning. Obviously, coming from Formula One was quite a big change in terms of how to drive the car.

"The energy management was probably the trickiest thing to get your head around. Pushing it over one lap as any car and you just want to maximize the pace and try to extract the most out of it.

"But now it is more the way you race with those cars that is very different because you have to manage a lot of your energy to be as efficient as possible while being as quick as possible as well.

"So that is not always the easy part of it and a lot of effort is built on that side."

Did you have to adapt your driving style for Formula E?

"I wouldn't say I had to change my driving completely. I think I just had to adapt to certain aspects of the car like certain inputs.

"The brakes, for example, are not as brutal as for a Formula One car. So, there are certain aspects that I had to tune in a little bit to create a different feel for the car."
