Lance Stroll (P8, 4 pts): 7.5/10
Lance Stroll was the very definition of 'flying under the radar' this weekend, and it worked out rather well for him. A lowly 18th in practice, he was frustrated to miss the cut at the end of the second round of qualifying. He started the sprint race from 15th place and made up a modest one place (in effect, thanks to Sergio Perez' spin and subsequent retirement) and frankly looked unlikely to be troubling the points on Sunday. But he made an impressive start, immediately gaining three places before the safety car and red flag. He pulled off the same magic at the restart and found himself up to eighth place, which he held on to - with only a brief interruption for his pit stop on lap 24 - for most of the afternoon. That was in stark contrast to his team mate Sebastian Vettel who squandered a much stronger starting position by spinning out. "We had a breakthrough today," Stroll said after the race. "We were able to turn around a tricky start to the weekend."
Fernando Alonso (P7, 6 pts): 8/10
Half a second behind Alpine team mate Esteban Ocon in Friday's practice session, Fernando Alonso was back on top in qualifying although neither man made the cut at the end of Q2 leaving the two-time world champion starting the sprint race from 11th. He made good use of the 25 minute outing, impressively gaining four spots to ensure that he lined up for Sunday's Grand Prix in seventh place. That was pretty much the most that could be expected from the AMR21 at Silverstone this weekend, and he maintained the position throughout the afternoon with only a brief hiatus for his pit stop that came on lap 24. After that he settled in behind Carlos Sainz and ran all the way to the chequered flag to pick up a valuable points haul for the team. "We made some good calls on strategy and executed everything well," he said afterwards. "It was a good result today and I am happy to score more points for the team."
