Lando Norris (Accident, Lap 1): 8/10
Consistently ninth place on Friday, it looked like Lando Norris and McLaren were going to struggle to match their rivals (chiefly Ferrari) at the Hungaroring. But then as has been so often the case in 2021 they perked up on Saturday and Norris cruised into the final round of qualifying, missing out on a second row spot by a slender 0.068s. Even so it set him up nicely for the start of the race, with the wet conditions giving him the opportunity to make an early move up to third after Valtteri Bottas made an atrocious start. Unfortunately that put Norris in the firing line ahead of the Finn going into turn 1: Bottas left his braking too late and ploughed into the side of the McLaren, pushing Norris into Max Verstappen resulting in extensive damage to all three cars. While Verstappen limped on, Norris was done for the day through no fault of his own other than the heinous crime of getting a strong start. It means that Norris's unbroken run of points finishes in 2021 is at an end.
Nikita Mazepin (Accident, Lap 4): 5/10
The good news for Nikita Mazepin is that he wasn't last in every practice session at the Hungaroring. The bad news is that the exception to the rule came in FP1 when Antonio Giovinazzi's technical issues limited the Alfa Romeo to just five unrepresentative laps. The Russian was slowest of those taking part in qualifying but still started ahead of Mick Schumacher who had been missing in action following a big accident in FP3. Otherwise Mazepin appeared rather inert this weekend, although at least he did avoid running into his team mate at any point which in the treacherous conditions at the start of Sunday's race was no mean feat. Unfortunately having survived that mayhem he was then taken out by a collision with Kimi Raikkonen on pit lane before the restart. At least it limited the opportunity for him to involve himself in an accident elsewhere.
